The Rise of "AI Slop"
For the last few years, AI has gone from novelty to necessity.
Need a caption? AI can write one. Need content ideas? AI has hundreds. Need an email template? AI can generate one in seconds.
The problem isn't that AI exists. The problem is that everyone is using it exactly the same way.
The internet is becoming flooded with generic, repetitive content, which many creators and marketers have started calling "AI slop." It's content created quickly with little originality, personality, or real value. While it may check all the boxes technically, it rarely leaves a lasting impression.
And platforms are taking notice. Social media networks are investing heavily in AI to improve recommendations, but they're also getting better at identifying low-quality, repetitive content. Their goal is simple: keep users engaged by showing them posts that feel genuine, entertaining, educational, or worth sharing.
In other words, originality is becoming more valuable than ever.
What Exactly Is AI Slop?
AI slop isn't simply content made with AI. It's content that feels like nobody actually cared enough to make it useful.
You know the type:
Generic motivational posts that could apply to anyone.
Captions full of buzzwords, but no real insight, packed with emojis and that telltale AI sign, the em dash —
Cartoony visuals paired with lifeless copy. (usually with spelling errors)
Videos that sound scripted, robotic, or disconnected from the business behind them.
None of it is technically "wrong." It's just forgettable. And forgettable content doesn't build trust.
AI Isn't the Enemy
Here's the good news: AI itself isn't the problem.
In fact, it's one of the most useful tools marketers have ever had! I use AI every week at Seven Social Co., not to replace creativity, but to speed up the parts of the process that don't require it.
AI is excellent for:
Brainstorming content ideas.
Organizing research.
Repurposing long-form content.
Writing first drafts.
Creating content calendars.
Summarizing meetings and interviews.
Used properly, AI gives marketers more time to focus on strategy, storytelling, and creativity. That's where the real value comes from.
When AI Starts Hurting Your Brand
Problems begin when AI becomes your entire marketing department. Customers are remarkably good at spotting content that feels manufactured. They may not know exactly why something feels "off," but they know when a post lacks personality.
If every caption sounds the same, if every Reel follows the same trend, if every blog says exactly what every other blog says... Your business becomes invisible.
People don't remember businesses that sound like everyone else. They remember businesses that sound human!
Authentic Doesn't Mean Unpolished
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that authentic content has to be raw, shaky, or poorly produced. That's not true. Authentic simply means your content reflects your business.
Your experience. Your expertise. Your customers. Your stories.
A cell phone shot behind-the-scenes video can be authentic. A polished 2-camera customer testimonial branded film can be authentic. A founder walking down the street explaining why they started the company can be authentic but so can them sitting at their desk with studio lighting.
Quality and authenticity aren't opposites. They're partners.
Your Competitive Advantage Isn't AI
Ironically, the more businesses rely entirely on AI-generated content, the more valuable genuine human insight becomes!
AI can summarize information. It can't replace years of experience working with customers. It can't tell your company's story. It can't capture the conversations happening in your office or the moments that make people trust your brand. Those are the things people actually connect with.
The bottom line is, AI isn't replacing authentic marketing. It's making authentic marketing more valuable. As more businesses flood social media with generic, AI-generated content, the brands willing to share real stories, real expertise, and real personality will naturally stand out.
Don't try to sound like a machine. Use technology to become more efficient, but let your business be remembered for sounding unmistakably human!
