Unfortunately, people do judge books by their covers. And when it comes to your business, that cover is your Instagram profile.
Think about the last time you were looking for a new restaurant, researching a hotel, or trying to find a local business. Chances are, you did a little research before committing. You might have checked the website, looked at reviews, browsed through some photos, or visited their social media profiles to see what the business was all about. For me, if a serviced based business doesn’t have an Instagram account, I’m always weary.
But now imagine finding a business that looks promising, only to discover that its last Instagram post was from eight months ago, its information is outdated, links are broken and its content tells you very little about what it actually offers.
Would you still feel confident reaching out? Perhaps. But you might also wonder whether the business is still operating, whether it takes its customer experience seriously, or whether a competitor might be a safer choice.
That is the reality of having a social media presence today. Your profiles are often part of a customer's first impression, and that impression can influence what happens next!
Your First Impression Might Happen Before the Customer Meets You
A potential customer doesn’t need to walk through your door to start forming an opinion about your business. Especially if you don’t have a traditional brick-and-mortar store. They might discover you through a Google search, a recommendation from a friend, an Instagram Reel, a tagged location, or a post shared by someone they follow.
Once they find you, they have an opportunity to learn more about your business. They can see what you offer, get a feel for your personality, look at examples of your work, and decide whether you seem like the right fit.
This is particularly important for businesses where trust plays a major role in the buying decision. People are spending their money, their time, or, in some cases, placing something valuable in your hands. Before they commit, they want a reason to feel comfortable doing so.
Your social media can help provide that reassurance. It can also create more questions than it answers if it looks neglected or fails to communicate what makes your business worth choosing.
What Does Your Social Media Say About Your Business?
Your social media presence communicates more than the words in your captions. It also tells people something about your standards, your personality, and how much attention you give to the customer experience.
An active profile with useful information, recent examples of your work, and genuine interactions helps potential customers understand that there are real people behind the business. A profile filled with outdated promotions, inconsistent messaging, or generic AI content can make it harder for someone to understand what you do and why they should care.
That does not mean every business needs professional photography every week, a perfectly curated Instagram grid, or a production budget that rivals a television commercial. The goal is to represent your business accurately, show people what you do, who you are, have a little fun and give people confidence in what you offer.
A small business with honest, useful, and well-planned content can make a much stronger impression than a business with an expensive-looking feed that says absolutely nothing!
Your Competitors Are Part of the Comparison
Even if a customer discovers your business through a recommendation, they may still look at alternatives before making a decision. They could compare your prices, read your reviews, browse your website, and look through the social media profiles of other businesses in the area.
Your social media does not have to be the most polished or popular profile in your industry. But it should help answer the question, "Why should I choose this business?"
If a competitor regularly showcases their work, answers customer questions, highlights their team, and makes it easy to find booking information, while your profile has been quiet for months, they may have an advantage in that comparison.
That does not mean posting more than your competitors simply for the sake of it. It means making sure your presence is working alongside the rest of your business rather than leaving potential customers to fill in the gaps themselves.
You Do Not Need a Perfect Feed… You Need a Credible One
It’s easy to assume that improving your social media means spending thousands on photography, buying expensive equipment, or posting every single day. For many businesses, that is neither necessary nor realistic.
Start by making sure your profiles are accurate and complete. Your contact details, location, services, and booking links should be easy to find. Then focus on sharing recent examples of your work, answering common questions, introducing the people behind the business, and showing customers what they can expect when they choose you.
Consistency matters, but consistency does not mean filling your feed with content that has no purpose. A smaller number of useful, relevant posts can do more for your reputation than a constant stream of generic graphics.
And remember that social media is social! Responding to comments, answering messages, and engaging with relevant local businesses and customers helps show that there is an active business behind the account.
You do not need to pretend to be something you’re not. You need to communicate what makes your business worth choosing!
Treat Your Social Media Like Part of Your Business
You would not deliberately leave your storefront looking neglected, make it difficult for customers to find your contact information, or ignore someone who walked in and asked a question. Your social media deserves that same consideration.
It’s not simply a place to announce promotions when you remember to post. It’s another way to communicate your standards, show your work, answer questions, and build relationships with people who may eventually become customers. Instagram isn’t your website, so feel free to have some fun with it and let people get to know you.
A strong social media presence cannot guarantee every visitor will book, buy, or get in touch. But it can help people understand your business, feel more confident about choosing you, and take the next step when they are ready.
Your business might be excellent at what it does. Make sure your online presence gives people a chance to see that! But that can be a lot, I get it. At Seven Social Co, the goal is not to post for the sake of posting. It’s to help businesses build a social media presence that reflects the quality of their work and gives potential customers a reason to pay attention.
